Signee pre-vocational programme

The Signee pre-vocational programme is directed at those already employed within the industry at an entry level role, those looking to change direction with their career, or school leavers interested in finding out what a career in the sign industry would be like. 

Training courses will focus on a beginners guide to industry standards in the ‘core‘ six pillars of sign making and health & safety in the sign industry.

Training courses will focus on a beginners guide to industry standards in the ‘core‘ six pillars of sign making and health & safety in the sign industry.

Design pillar icon

The style, layout, look and feel of the overall finished sign. Making decisions on what techniques, materials, substrates and print mediums will be used. 

Manufacture pillar icon

Fabricating and assembling the sign and sign parts using a variety of materials, tools, equipment and machinery.

Applying the design to a surface/substrate using a variety of processes, technology, print mediums, techniques and equipment.

Installing the sign using tools, equipment and machinery. This can also involve working at heights.

Hand painting mediums and hand rendered techniques and processes to apply to a surface/substrate.

Creating a wide range of illuminated sign solutions, using various lighting options and techniques. This can also involve electrical work.

The programme consists of four blended learning components

one

work experience

Signee pre-vocational – work experience

Trainee will undertake at least 15 full days work experience in a full service sign business.

Any Gateway students will complete a full week and then one day a week for the remaining 10 weeks.

TWO

online learning

Signee pre-vocational – online learning

Trainee completes all online courses while either working in a sign business
or on placement one day a week.

THREE

external training

Signee pre-vocational – external courses

Trainee registers and passes all three external courses at a time suitable with employer before the 11 week term is up. 

The three external courses are working with tools, working at heights and first aid.

final assessment workshop

Signee pre-vocational – assessment workshop

Is a final assessment workshop which will take place over a weekend in either Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland. 

The assessment workshop will be held a full service sign business and assessed by two or more Master Sign Makers and Training and Communications Officer. 

The final assessment will involve a test based on work experience and online learning and a mock client brief to produce two basic signs from design to installation.

+ School students doing a Gateway programme towards NCEA

  • 27573 Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in a sign making workplace, level 3, credits 5
  • 27572 Demonstrate an overview knowledge of sign making in New Zealand, level 2, credits 8

+ Others wanting to have the H&S unit standard counted towards a future apprenticeship or recorded on their record of learning through NZQA.

  • 27573 Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in a sign making workplace, level 3, credits 5

+ Reads training materials

+ Works to the best of their ability

+ Completes online tasks and external courses

+ Works to complete course on time

Digital badges are awarded for each online course completed
